Made of Us, featuring Joiner - Gavin Murtagh

Published on 10 Sep 2026

For Gavin, joinery began with family and a belief in learning the craft by hand.

Orior

Did you grow up in Newry?

Gavin Murtagh

Outside, in the country, about 7 miles from here.

Orior

What was it like growing up?

Gavin Murtagh

Mostly just played football, Gaelic, bit of golf. Just out there running around the fields.

Orior

Were you making anything?

Gavin Murtagh

My Father was a welder, is a welder. Helping him a wee bit then sort of got me into what I'm doing now.

Orior

How did you become a joiner?

Gavin Murtagh

My Uncle is a joiner, and he's the best joiner I've ever seen.

The relationship I had with my uncle was, for me it's the proper way to learn. It was hand tools, cutting things with your saw at the start, for me, learning the proper way, learning the skill.

So it was so sort of nowadays, the younger generation, yes, it's nearly all machines, but you don't get to see their skills at the start and learn properly from it.

So I count myself lucky that I learned off him and for me to learn the proper way.

Orior

Tell me about when you started at Orior.

Gavin Murtagh

That was 2021, we built a new wing onto the factory and I was in helping the builder who built the wing and Ciaran liked my work and he wanted to do a bit of work on his house and he liked what I had done and just done a wee bit more and a wee bit more.

And the next thing, I'm here making the furniture for them.

"What sets Orior apart is the quality. It's as simple as that."
